Key Skills

Learners will develop competence in routine catheter care, including hygiene, drainage bag management, monitoring urine output, and maintaining equipment. They will gain skills in stoma and nephrostomy site care, observing for leakage, skin breakdown, or infection. Participants will strengthen their ability to document accurately, report concerns promptly, and support individuals with continence care needs. Emphasis is placed on infection control, safeguarding, communication, maintaining dignity, and promoting independence where possible.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, learners will be able to provide safe and effective catheter, stoma, nephrostomy, and continence care within their scope of practice. They will confidently recognise normal and abnormal findings, report concerns appropriately, and support individuals in maintaining comfort and hygiene. Graduates will demonstrate an understanding of different catheter types, routine maintenance procedures, infection prevention measures, and the importance of preserving dignity and promoting person-centred care in various healthcare settings.
