Key skills developed during this course include recognising early warning signs of aggression, understanding triggers and risk factors, and applying effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to prevent escalation. Participants will learn how to use de-escalation strategies, maintain personal and patient safety, assess risk, and respond appropriately to challenging behaviour within healthcare settings. The course also develops teamwork, situational awareness, and decision-making skills during incidents. In addition, participants will gain knowledge of safe physical intervention techniques, including the use of least restrictive approaches, safe positioning, and post-incident reflection and reporting in line with legal and organisational requirements.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to identify the causes and triggers of aggression within healthcare settings and recognise early warning signs of escalating behaviour. They will be able to apply effective communication and de-escalation techniques to reduce tension and maintain a safe environment for both service users and staff. Participants will also demonstrate an understanding of risk assessment, personal safety, teamwork, and appropriate responses to challenging situations. In addition, they will understand the principles of safe physical intervention, including the use of least restrictive techniques, legal and ethical responsibilities, and the importance of post-incident reflection, reporting, and continuous improvement in practice.
