1. Phlebotomy and venepuncture: theory and supervised practice to ensure safe blood collection 2. Syringe driver operation and peripheral cannulation, including indications and troubleshooting 3. Verification of expected death in line with clinical and legal requirements 4. PEG feeding procedures and patient safety considerations 5. Male and female catheterisation and catheter care, with hands-on practice 6. Use of National Early Warning Scores (NEWS) to recognise deterioration 7. Wound assessment, dressing selection and wound care techniques 8. Medication administration and management, with emphasis on safety, documentation and accountability Each skill is introduced theoretically and reinforced through supervised practical sessions and assessment.
By the end of the Clinical Skills Onboarding programme, participants will be able to confidently perform essential bedside procedures to a safe and professionally acceptable standard. They will demonstrate competent practice in phlebotomy, venepuncture, syringe driver use, cannulation, catheterisation, PEG feeding, wound care and medication administration, reinforced through supervised practical assessments. Participants will also be able to apply NEWS to identify and escalate clinical deterioration appropriately. Overall, they will gain greater procedural confidence, improved clinical judgement, and a clear understanding of safety, documentation and accountability requirements, enabling them to integrate smoothly into clinical teams and deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.
