Course content • The historic context: The Village Carpenter and other references. • Historic houses and lost techniques. • Timber Selection and working with natural timber. • Construction methods and longevity. • Technology and working with historic buildings. • Fixing methods: Nail and clench, peg and wedge. • Tools and techniques: Saws, spoke shaves, draw knives, the hand reamer, adze, planes and blades, scratch stock, moulding planes and chisels. • Finishes.
• To gain an understanding of what constitutes traditional joinery and how that is differentiated – supporting appropriate advice to project teams in period joinery projects. • To become familiar with the complexities and considerations of working with natural timber and develop knowledge of appropriate materials choices. • To see first-hand the tools used in traditional joinery and learn the skills involved in using them. • To appreciate the approaches in natural timber finishing and build confidence in using natural timber finishes over processed materials and painted finishes.
